Interpol Lights up San Diego
October 5th 2018
Cal Coast Open Air theatre - San Diego
Interpol Is: Paul Banks, Daniel Kessler, Sam Fogarino.
Friday Night, Interpol brought their Marauder tour to San Diego and gifted fans an unforgettable night that roared beyond expectations.
A set literally designs to bring down the sky at hands reach and play into their trance setting sound only to create the perfect background to Banks hypnotic vocals , Kesslers’s sleeks riffs and Fogarino’s haunting beats.
When it comes to Interpol we have come to expect if not demand moody and cerebral as much as visceral shows capable of pulling you right out of the mundane and no other song could lend itself so perfectly as show opener as the following .
Pioneers To The Falls is possibly one of the most beautiful tunes ever written, the light and airy guitar riffs pair so well with Banks deep and almost monotoned and beautifully haunting vocals. Its repetitiveness just reels you in deeper and deeper and leaves you wanting more.
The giant disco ball that lurked over the stage fragmented lights delivering an atmospheric experience that melted perfectly with the opening track allowing you to really get lost into each individual layer of the song.
With The second song, the band introduced their latest single from “ Marauder” - “ If you really Love Nothing” In this song Fogarino’s drums are infectious and capable of taking you over and Banks plays so well into the crescendo of the song starting off with an almost timid falsetto that just slowly gets richer as the song grows. . .
Roland is just one of those songs that is so unbelievable live, one of those songs you just lose yourself to, and it was beautiful to watch Daniel Kessler glide around loosing himself in the moment.
All The Rage Back Home was another highlight for me , it is another one of those Classic Interpol songs that is just so multifaceted that never gets old not to mention that being surrounded by fans singing it word by word just made it that much richer.
The Band brought us back to a more somber and intimate mood with NYC from Turn On The Bright Lights to immediately after lunch us into a fast paced release with The Rover, the first single released from Marauder which got every fan moving.
And ultimately this is what makes Interpol shows so unforgettable. Their set lists allows you to experience so many emotions all within the span of a two hour show creating a truly satisfying and intricate emotional response to their performance. that leaves you breathless but always wanting more.
Another highlight for me was Number 10, still one of my favorite tracks from Marauder alongside Flight Of Fancy luckily also included in tonight’s set list.
Slow hands and and Evil are old time fan favorites that just brought the tempo of the evening back up….
The night ended with Lights ,followed by Flight Of Fancy to end with pure magic with Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down, my favorite tune from Turn On The Bright Lights.
