Burning From The Inside - Bauhaus
Released in 1983, Burning From The Inside marked the end of an era as it would be the last studio album for Bauhaus until the much later release of "Go Away White" .
Due to medical issue Peter Murphy wasn't as available for this and much of the writing ended up being passed on to the rest of the band resulting in my eyes in the most experimental and abstract of their albums which gifted me what would ultimately become my favorite Bauhaus song of all times: King Volcano .
The album as a whole seems hypnotic and somehow theatrical for the most part and while a few critics would describe the album as disjointed I find it exhuberatingly eclectic.
I Love how the very cinematographical "Who killed Mr Moonlight" contrasts itself from the raw and mesmerizing Antonin Artaud, I love how theatrical "King Volcano" feels opposed to "She's in Parties", their final commercially released single, whose melodic chords paired with Peter masterful vocals and and an addicting bass line keeps you looking out for more and has since become a staple for any Bauhaus fan.
The repetitive tempo and almost ritualistic monotone vocals on the title track are masterfully capable of putting you in a trance while the final song completely shifts to something aery and light, hopeful if you will...the lyrics read:
"Your mornings will be brighter
Break the line
Tear up rules
Make the most of a million times no…"
and in a way these words fully sum up Bauhaus, they bent lines, created their own rules and certainly made the dark a lot brighter and beautiful.
